General procedure: Decide to make your right turn well in advance of the turn. Signal, check your rear gate and check your blind spot. When safe, move as close to the right as possible. Check for traffic, pedestrians and other real or potential hazards in or near the intersection.
A basic left, straight ahead, right, left sweeping pattern will be sufficient. Slow down and shift to a lower gear if you are in a manual transmission vehicle. This includes a curb lane lined with parking meters. The lane next to the curb where vehicles park is best referred to as a curb lane, not a parking lane.
Curb lanes are not just for parking. They are used to turn off a road and onto a road. Prepare for a turn well in advance. If you are not in the proper turning lane, check your rear view and outside mirrors and do a shoulder check. Signal and change lanes when it is safe. You should be in your proper turning lane at least 15 metres 50 feet before the intersection.
Be sure you yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and traffic on the cross street. Before you begin to turn, check the street you are turning onto to decide if there is room to turn into the curb lane. Check over your right shoulder for cyclists and pedestrians approaching the intersections.
When turning right from a two-way road onto another two-way road, stay centred in your turning lane, and no more than 1 metre 3 feet from the curb or edge of the road. Stay approximately this distance as you approach the intersection, while turning, and as you leave the intersection.
Do not turn wide and occupy 2 lanes when turning. Turning can be dangerous, because it usually means you have to cross the path of other vehicles.
Remember — turning traffic gives way to traffic that is not turning. If you are turning left, use your left indicator. If you are turning right, use your right indicator. If there are other vehicles moving fast or following too closely, or if the road is narrow, it may be best to wait on the left-hand side of the road to make the turn, rather than stopping in the middle of the road and holding up traffic.
Take extra care on roads where the traffic is moving quickly. A right-turn bay is an area where vehicles that are turning right can wait until it is safe to turn, without holding up vehicles going straight through.
As you approach the right-turn bay, the road will be painted with a white triangle with diagonal lines inside it, followed by one or more right-turn arrows. Here is an example of making turns in California and Texas. Notice that the driver may complete the turn in any lane open to traffic if it is safe to do so as shown by arrows below.
Right Turn against a Red Light: Signal and stop for a red traffic light before the stop line or limit line , if there is one, or before entering the intersection. If there is no sign that prohibits a right turn on the red light, you may turn right. Be careful that you do not interfere with pedestrians, bicyclists, or vehicles moving on their green light. Note: that a right turn on a red light is prohibited by law in New York City.
