The morning began with a boat parade between Island White and Island Grissum. The race then began at 9am on the oil island of Long Beach. More than 60 skiers and boaters embarked on a journey to the Catalina city of Avalon before returning to the Queen Mary.
Audiences flocked to Long Beach and the waterfront of San Pedro, watching jet skis and boats depart. As the only open-sea ski race to be held on a regular basis, the event attracted athletes from all over the world.
