Sadly as is often the case this was not a review but a promotion for a camera that consistently provides blurry, noisy pictures. Not something I experience with the Nikon D It is a beautiful camera in most other ways, skin colours are good but don't use it without a flash for portraits unless in full sunlight. I now take both bodies when taking nature photos. It's bigger and g heavier than D It is twice the weight of Sony A7r and almost twice the weight of NX1. All are sealed metal cameras although Sony's sealing is so-so. What are they putting in there, bricks? The 7D Mark II and D are very different cameras that will lead very different but equally valid lives. And yes, D is mostly metal. Although some carbon fiber does not hurt. Plastics are getting very good but I still prefer my cameras to be metal.
So is the design of a camera. Carbon fiber is lighter, stronger and more expensive than metal. To prefer a metal chassis on a camera makes no sense at all. D killer? Not even close. Canon apparently has given up even trying to get the dynamic range and megapixels Nikon and Sony both offer now. Instead, a warmed over rehash body with a few tweaks. I was actually hoping for a 6DII but then again, this line is already quite long overdue Canon and Nikon appear to differ in their marketing strategy.
Nikon has introduced 3 full frame models this year. Canon has introduced zero FF so far and the end of the year is approaching fast. How well this camera does in the market place pretty much determines where camera technology is heading.
Image quality, OTOH, is very different. The larger sensor wins in most cases. Actually they have different applications. For some type of photography when you are mostly limited in range mostly crop the image anyways then it is better using a APS-C sensor. Larger sensor wins for all non range limited photgraphy when it comes to quality, but not when it comes to price. I'll go for the Canon 6D because FF is, in my opinion, a complete system. However, FF cameras allows you to do more, especially when you want to isolate your subjects.
I tried to isolate my subject using the Fuji 56mm f1. The question is, what are you going to do when you realize you needed that extra shallow DOF? Wow, Canon managed to make it bigger and heavier in every way compares with 7D. Seems like Canon, Nikon and Pentax haven't realized human aren't envolving as big as they imagined we would be.
Call me when it appears. I bet that is about years away. Until then there isn't even a decent display you could calibrate. And then you need to upgrade your computer and graphics card to be able to drive it, the software isn't ready for the high resolution either - not even Photoshop CC can handle high DPI displays Indeed Karl, how many of us have 4K display devices.
Another years before 4K becomes mainstream. I Don't understand it. This is second body for longer reach. And what about with extender That's something unbelievable To hell with 4K video;- Everyone want universal tool for everything. But few will use what today's cameras can do. I think that there will be good sales of 7DII.
I use my 7D too take pictures. Because other cameras have it. People want no compromise of anything. Any other camera that doesn't have 4k is lagging or failing or not meeting market needs or whichever. Same with size. If a camera is smaller then any larger camera is unnecessarily large. Doesn't matter if there is a reason or utility. It isn't meeting this and that and etc It is too little too late, obviously Canon is protecting their higher end cameras, we will see how good it sells.
For me I am seriously thinking about leaving Canon. Heck, even the 1Dx doesn't have the outstanding focusing capabilities the 7DII now will please it's owner with! Obviously you either don't have much of a lens collection, or you don't like it that much.
And yet no 4k. And no P RAW. So it's gonna be worse than a 5D3 for p video so long as dealing with RAW is workable. I guess they can get away with it in this cam, but it is a bit of a shame to lock the 7D series into a sensor for another years. And not giving it 4k seems to show some lack of foresight, everything under the sun will offer 4k soon enough. I would assume that at least it doesn't alias and is like the 5D3 in that regard now , one could only hope it won't be a wax-works, weak res p like the 5D3 without ML RAW, but I have doubts.
And if someone wants 4k now they will have to go elsewhere and maybe then there is not enough money left for this cam. But the more worrisome signs, sine the 5D4 is the cam that really can not afford to use a sensor again or lack 4k, is all the talk that Canon sees 4k as an ultra-premium feature that they have no intention of allowing in any 5D series or under any time soon in which case the 5D4, since I doubt they'd 'dare' give it p RAW out of the box and ML would take a year, if not potentially forever to unlock it, would have WORSE video than the 5D3, so who would ever get thta or a 7D2 for video?
If this had arrived 2 years, awesome beyond belief. If it had arrived last year without 4k but with a new sensor, awesome! Now, arriving today, it's certainly quite nice in many respects, 10fps, perhaps AF better than 1DX hopefully it's not just a lot of cross points, but GOOD cross points, the 7D had a lot of points but they were more xxD class than 1 series class , metering should be much better, so it should be a beast in those regard.
If you don't do video and for all scenes that don't have a lot of dynamic range, on paper, it sounds like a really awesome performer. But crippling 4k out of it and not updating the sensor fab for DSLRs yet it a bit of a shame, at some point already for video this sort of action is gonna have to eventually start outright biting them.
And the talk that they feel they have people trapped enough by their lenses that they can do stuff like this will eventually get too many fed up. And, recognizing that for some, creative expression may expand beyond still photography, we continue to support these creative passions by offering new and innovative Full HD video capabilities.
I really hope for a new sensor, I do not see how otherwise this camera will be competitive in IQ for the next years. Few will touch this for birds and athletes in flight. I sold long ago the 7D because of the poor dynamic range and ok noise at low light.
What will it take to please you people? This is a beast. I doubt if this has better AF than 1DX in real life. Canon sensors are still the best or at least on par at higher ISO. No, the sensor tech and flipping mirror are things of the past.
What Nikon should have announced - said as a Nikon user since the original Nikon F. I don't shoot video, so no 4K is irrelevant to me. No 4K video. Same rehashed sensor tech from more than 5 years ago. Looks like Canon has been asleep the last half decade. The sensor is 1 year old He means the technology behind the sensor is the same. Maybe more pixels but no appreciable changes in performance with respect to Sony sensors. I don't know if that is true or not but isn't just talking about MP.
I haven't really looked into this camera but there was a new sensor design with the 70D, right..? That isn't 5 years old. Does this camera use the 70D focus point on sensor or whatever it was technology? The technology behind the sensor isn't much older either.
So whoever says "5 year old technology" has clearly no clue whatsoever! Really Karl The competion moved on years ago to 24mp and 1. No clue indeed when all to with you refer as autofucus.
Old tech it is. Dave, the competition doesn't have 2 stops better DR - that's all due to measurement and interpretation errors by the only company that does such hapless measurebating Better DR is true Canon should start buying sensors from Samsung so they can get 4k video in APS-C : Is this really all Canon brings to the table after 5 years?
No DONT. Concentrate on photography and leave videos to specialist video cameras. I couldn't care less about video. I don't think the sensor has to drop to bit to shoot a series. Continuous Low is recorded in bit. This is all a function of sensor read, yes, bit buffer clearing and what all as well.
The smaller files for bit enabled them to add a frame or two to Continuous High. A great highMP resolution camera similar to the great 70d , fast new technology AF system, 10fps, plenty of buffer capacity And the posibility to have a clean ISO. We have to see the field test but this is what the wildlife community many ds users like me were wainting since I think the price its ok Well done Canon.
Sounds like a long lens action shooters dream camera in search of a worthy sensor but I'll wait for the reviews and tests. Do action shooters typically do shadow boosted HDR? If not, there's no disadvantage to the Canon sensor. My needs are long glass for extraction from scenes and compression of landscapes.
In bright contrasty days some shadow recovery is very welcome. I hope this is not the 70D sensor. I am in the market for this camera if it sports a new sensor, otherwise I am starting to get very frustrated with Canon.
Not saying I am happy about it but plenty of people were waiting for such a camera mostly for birding, wildlife and sports. APS-C cameras also have wider AF point coverage vs the clustered AF points in the middle of the frame on the full frame cameras, and the crop factor is beneficial to those who shoot sports, wildlife, aviation etc. The only reason Canon sells more cameras is because Nikon refused to come out with FF for a very long time so now Canon will sell more cameras because they stick with APS-C, you think?
The truth is that Canon just can't produce high resolution sensor. Since they got away with it with the support of Canon loyalists, they are trying to pull the same thing with the 7DII..
On the other hand later on Canon gives really good discounts. Or you can buy refurbished with full 1 year warranty. And Canon will give unofficial 1 year warranty if you have USA receipt.
