The song debuted at 66 on the Billboard Hot Airplay chart on April 18th , and eventually spent a record 18 weeks at number one in Hot Airplay. It was not allowed to chart on the Billboard Hot until after it had peaked because no commercial single had been released. However, it did debut at nine. On the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, "Iris" peaked at number eight. The song was the band's 2nd number one hit on the Modern Rock Tracks chart since their hit "Name" and Iris stayed at number one for five weeks and the song also hit number one on the Top 40 Mainstream chart for four weeks.
The song spent a then-record 17 weeks at number one on the Billboard Adult Top 40 chart beating No Doubt's week run at number one with "Don't Speak" in The song was also a major international hit. Besides the song's success on the charts, "Iris" enjoyed critical acclaim. The song was used frequently in the British comedy Gavin and Stacey. I was looking for something to hold on to. On the morning of the day he wrote Iris , the singer had attended an advance screening of City Of Angels — a film whose premise concerned an angel [played by Nicolas Cage ] who surrenders his immortality to be with the woman he loves [Meg Ryan].
But one of the reasons I wanted to do a song was because the soundtrack had U2 and Peter Gabriel on it, and I wanted to be on the same piece of plastic as them. It made me feel like I was hob-nobbing with musical royalty. I thought that someday I could show it to my kids — tell them their old man was once on a record with Bono and Peter Gabriel. What an amazing thing it must be like to love someone so much that you give up everything to be with them.
The name Iris was inspired by a country singer named Iris DeMent, who Rzeznik found while reading a magazine. Despite spending a record of 18 weeks at number one in the Hot Airplay chart, it was not allowed to chart on the main Billboard Hot , because no commercial single had been released.
